Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – July 12, 1982

We had an open session of Parliament. I left part of the session to Mr. [Mohammad] Mousavi Khoeiniha and attended to my pending work. Mr. [Seyyed Reza] Zavarei came and consulted about the new members of the Presiding Board who will be elected next week.

After the noon prayer, we had a meeting of the Presiding Board. In the evening, the Sunni clerics of Kurdistan came; they are satisfied with the Revolution. I spoke to them. They were angry about the Kurdish rebels and said that so far, they have martyred twenty Sunni clerics.

I did a long interview about hijab with television. I had a meeting with the Health Deputy of the Ministry of Health, who wanted help in promoting health goals and family planning during Friday prayers. A group of humanities professors from universities also came and were worried that rumors of delays in reopening humanities disciplines were intensifying, and they asked for help.

I came home for iftar. Tonight, about twenty IRGC members were our guests and left after iftar. Eftekhar, Fati, and Mohsen went to Jame'e al-Sadegh for the vigil ceremony, and I held the vigil alone at home.

Dr. Velayati called to consult about participating in the conference of [foreign] ministers of Islamic countries in Tunis, and it was decided that we would respond later and also seek the Imam's opinion. Today, in the city of Sabzevar, there was a clash between the IRGC and supporters of the Friday prayer leader, resulting in two deaths and several injuries. We dispatched a committee to investigate: from my side, Dr. [Mousa] Zargar, and from the President's side, Mr. [Mohammad] Emami Kashani, the head of the Administrative Justice Court.
