Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – January 4, 1992

It snowed well last night. The boredom of chastity continued. I ate breakfast alone and heated milk for chastity.

I reached my office at half past eight in the morning. Mr. [Hossein] Mahluji, [Minister of Mines and Metals], CEO of Isfahan Steel Factory and CEO of Mubarake Steel came. They asked for permission to conclude the Isfahan steel development contract with Italy; It seems that the plan that the Italians were supposed to implement for Basra before Iraq invaded Kuwait, and now it has been canceled, they want to give it to us at a lower price. Mobarake steel and its foreign currency costs were negotiated; I think it is too much and needs to be explained.

Dr. Maleki and his brother came; Both are doctors and work in Canada. They said that modern medicines are not used in Iran. They said the necessity of using advanced medical tools and modern medicines and the high expertise of Iranians abroad. His brother requests that we help him continue his studies at a Canadian university with a government scholarship.

Dr. [Hasan] Habibi, [First Vice President] came for the current affairs of the country and establishment of information unit in the organization. Dr. [Mohammed Hossein] Adli, [President of the Central Bank] came. He gave a report on the situation of currency and rial and told the liquidity control plan. They talked about supporting economic and trade cooperation with former Soviet Muslim republics.

I worked until six in the evening. The Supreme National Security Council had a meeting. They talked about retaliating against the mischief of France and Switzerland. After the meeting with Dr. Velayati, [Minister of Foreign Affairs] and Falahian [Minister of Information], we discussed about Afghanistan.
