Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – August 9, 1988

In the morning news, it was reported that last night the UN Secretary General Xavier Perez Decoyar announced that a ceasefire between Iran and Iraq will be established on August 29, 2020. I feel satisfied that I played a major role in ending the war.

I went to the parliament. Mr. Saeed Rajai Khorasani, the representative of Tehran in the Majlis, came. He gave warnings about the current issues of the ceasefire. Mr. Mehdi Karroubi came. Discussions were held regarding the future measures to normalize the country's situation and especially the economic and welfare issues of the people.

Timsar Sattari came. He talked about the work of the Air Force and some items of the force's needs that were found for purchase. [Mr. Seyed Jalil Seyedzadeh, Mohammad Ashrafi Esfahani and Arslan Safaipour [the representatives of Bakhtran came and said something about the recent issues of the region and thanks to Hwaniroz. Dr. Jasbi came. He talked about the problems of Islamic Azad University with the Ministry of Science and the entrance exam that was delayed because of the front. Mr.] Morteza [Katirai], the head of the presidium, came for the administrative affairs of the parliament.

In the evening, Mr. Seyed Ali Hosseini Tash, deputy commander of the IRGC Navy, came and talked about the organization of the IRGC and the armed forces. Mr. Reza Amrollahi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization, came and talked about the war in the West and Ilam, which he attended, and atomic energy issues. I went to the General Staff [Command of the Armed Forces] meeting. They talked about the casualties after the ceasefire and about the Iraqi dissidents who are in Iran. A commission was formed to investigate the affairs of the opponents and their future, in connection with the peace of Iraq.

We went to the meeting of the Expediency Council. The law on intensifying the punishment of bribery in offices was approved with amendments. After the meeting, we discussed with the president and the prime minister about the completion of the cabinet; concluded It was decided that the three ministers of energy, construction and trade will also be introduced. I arrived home late.

I wrote an announcement and ordered the troops not to take the lead in military actions, but to respond firmly to the evils and asked the people to maintain their presence at the front.
