Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi - March 20, 2000

The last entry of Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani's diary for the year 1999.

A glimpse into the media, political, and press atmosphere in the country following Madeleine Albright's statements, as narrated by Hashemi.

A report by Bijan Namdar Zanganeh regarding the oil market.

The publication of Ayatollah Khamenei's open letter concerning the investigation into the perpetrators of Saeed Hajarian's assassination has led to various political interpretations, some of which should be followed up in the memoirs of 2000.

I spent all my time at the pavilion, studying and walking along the beach, with some swimming in between; morning, noon, and night. I usually watch special news recorded via modem on my computer. Inside the country, the leftist faction continues to interpret [Madeleine] Albright's statements positively, particularly focusing on her acknowledgment of America's mistreatment of Iran during the Iran-Iraq War and the coup of August 28, as well as her promise to allow Iranian pistachios, caviar, and carpets into America. The opposing faction highlights the negative aspects of her remarks, with Dr. [Hassan] Rouhani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, providing the most explicit criticism. American officials have stated that it has become clear that divisions in Iran are very serious and they are pursuing a policy of exacerbating these divisions.

Mr. [Bijan Namdar] Zanganeh, the Minister of Oil, came by. He reported on disagreements among OPEC members regarding increasing oil production. The U.S. is applying significant pressure to raise production. Iran does not agree; it only supports an increase of less than one million barrels. The President of the United States has intervened personally, and Congress has passed a resolution allowing him to cut off aid to countries opposing increased oil production.

The Chinese government, despite previous threats in case pro-independence forces won in Taiwan, has adopted a more flexible stance and stated that it is waiting for Taiwan's actions; Taiwan has also expressed its readiness to negotiate with China.

A letter from the leadership addressed to Mr. [Seyyed Mohammad] Khatami, [the President], was published, requesting that the pursuit of those responsible for Mr. [Saeed] Hajarian's assassination be taken seriously and expedited so that it does not suffer delays like the chain murders. There was criticism regarding his follow-up on this issue and a request not to allow rumors to weaken individuals or the IRGC and Basij forces. Supporters of Mr. Khatami are upset and claim that this letter was not supposed to be made public. The water situation at my residence is not organized because repairs have been ongoing and are still incomplete.
