The Shah's promise of democracy from Rome and the arrest of Mossadegh's supporters.

Two days after the coup d'état of August 19, on August 21, 1953, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who had fled to Italy after the failure of the first phase of the coup, promised democracy to the people in a message from Rome. This message was broadcast on Tehran Radio and printed in newspapers.

But on the same day, news of the arrest of Mossadegh's supporters was published. Some newspapers wrote: "More than 200 supporters of Mossadegh arrested." Others wrote: "The purge of government offices continues."

August 21, 1953, was a day when the Shah promised democracy, but in practice, Mossadegh's supporters were being arrested one by one. And the people understood: promises stay only on paper.
